When people think about April holidays or days to celebrate, they think of Easter or maybe even Earth Day. But happening on April 25, 2026, is a day nobody seems to celebrate. Arbor Day is the day dedicated to planting and nurturing the plants and trees on our planet, and it needs to be more recognized and celebrated, especially at this time, because the impact of this day could really bring a positive impact and change the world.
When asked in a poll on Instagram, 73% of students did not know about Arbor Day, while 20% of students had heard about the day but had never celebrated it or did not know when it was. That leaves only 7% of students celebrating this holiday.
Arbor Day is a day made for combating climate change through planting more trees. Trees reduce the CO2, they combat global warming, control soil erosion, and clean the air and water. More benefits of planting trees include reducing urban heat and even improving mental health. Trees help to improve mental health by providing shade and lessening stress levels. And planting new trees provides hope for the future.
The Arbor Day Foundation gives 8 reasons why you should plant a tree for Arbor Day. These reasons are: Clean air and water, offsetting carbon emissions, reducing stormwater, safer neighborhoods, cooler cities, less stress, low energy use, and curb appeal. They talk about how trees make a difference, and so can you. The importance of trees is massive.
How should Arbor Day be celebrated? Volunteer opportunities are usually available, and usually include planting trees or forest restoration. More activities could be picking up trash and litter from local forests and parks, or even donating money to tree planting organizations.
Avani Timsina (Junior) was a part of an NHS (National Honor Society) service group that picked up litter and trash from a nearby park. She was asked why picking up trash and volunteering for forest cleanup was important to her, and she said
“I think that we live on this Earth, so we need to take care of it. Why would we destroy our only home? I love nature, and it feels nice to clean up trash that could be harming the forest and animal life.”
She also describes how it only took around an hour for her group to finish, so they went to another park to clean up more trash. But the moral of the story is that with a group of friends, it’s a fun and nice thing to do for the environment.
Telling and educating more people about the importance of this day would only benefit our world. It is statistically proven that around 94% of U.S citizens recognize the importance of trees, which creates a great environment for support and makes it easy to spread the word about this wonderful nature day. Arbor Day is not a holiday of the past or that celebrities of the past, but celebrates new growth and the future.
