Teaching is a type of job that is only intended for the patient and kind-hearted, although some qualities are lacking in others; Lauren Boggs amplifies all of these qualities! She is one of the Current Events teachers here at Lakeside. She has been teaching at Lakeside for 10 years and has been teaching for over 14 years. Mrs. Boggs started out teaching at Henderson Middle School, and shortly after, transferred to Lakeside and started her journey teaching here and changing lives.
When asked why Boggs chose to become a history teacher in the first place, she stated: “Social studies was always my favorite subject in school, and my grandmother was a Holocaust survivor, which I always found interesting.”
Current and past students of Boggs express much love for her. Siddh Patel, 11th, states that she’s “Energetic, sweet, caring, and carries herself with Viking pride.”
When it comes down to curriculum, Boggs describes her teaching style as engaging, interactive, and also student-centered.
Niylah Bagley states, “Mrs. Boggs is a very good teacher. I would describe her teaching style as hands-on learning, which also involves a lot of fun classroom activities and games. I miss having her class.”
Boggs has changed the lives of many students and influenced their choices and how they perform in school throughout her entire teaching career.
I personally walked into my freshman year not expecting to exceed my own expectations until I met Mrs. Boggs. I was placed in her current events class, and it turned out to be a pivotal learning moment in my early high school career.
Boggs loves and cares about every student in Lakeside, and especially the ones in her class that she refers to as her own children.
One of Boggs biggest pet peeves is students who have potential and don’t use that potential to their advantage, and instead play around and skip school.
Another interesting fact about her would be her acceptance of criticism and accountability. She states, “I love being held accountable from my peers and higher-ups because if not, what are we doing?”
Everyone has hobbies outside of school, even teachers! A few hobbies that Boggs indulges in are hanging out with her daughter Lily, listening to Beyonce, whose favorite song is Formation, and she loved the music video and thought it was very powerful, and trying restaurants in Atlanta because her husband is a foodie.
A challenge she’s had to face would be holding kids accountable. One way she has tried overcoming that challenge is that she states, “I can’t control what happens in school, but I can control what happens to my kids in the classroom.”
Proud moments make a person feel pride in themselves, for Boggs some proud moments she has had while teaching would be “the walkouts in school after the Parkland shooting and ICE walkouts. One other moment I was proud of for the school was when Lucy McBath came to speak at the school. I felt like that was huge.”
Boggs can attest to her own personal growth since starting her career here at Lakeside. She states, “Yes, I’ve worked with different types of kids as well as adults, and seeing different types of people has helped me grow as a person and change my perspective on lots of things.”
Lakeside is very lucky to have a phenomenal teacher such as Mrs. Boggs! She represents school spirit, family values, and a strong Viking community! She will continue to change the lives of students daily!
