Heartwarming Heather Hoyne is a dynamic English teacher at Lakeside High School.
She works as a gifted liaison for the school. She started teaching at Clayton High School, but then quickly moved on to La Grange and now Lakeside, where she has resided for around 13 years.
Hoyne originally wanted to be a writer, but her mother told her that she needed a backup plan. She has earned a Bachelor’s degree in English Creative Writing and a Master’s Degree in Media and Education from the University of West Georgia.
A typical workday for Hoyne looks like teaching three sections of an AP Seminar, two sections of Literature and Composition, with two additional sections of Gifted and Accelerated Learning. She coordinates assessments for students and works on communicating with parents about gifted children, doing her best to ensure that kids are getting the right educational services they need.
Her favorite part of the job is teaching American Literature and interacting with the students, since this way she can understand them better. She loves getting to know her students’ personalities, goals, and dreams and how to get them to where they want to be.
All teachers have favorites outside of the classroom though. Grey’s Anatomy just so happens to be her favorite TV show. Other things she enjoys doing is reading, painting, baking, and doing other very artsy fun things. She enjoys the genre of Gothic reading.
Surprisingly, separating her from other teachers in her department: She has not read the Harry Potter series!
The way she wants to leave an impact on Lakeside is, she wants to make sure students know that they’re cared for. It’s less about the books and academics, but more of students leaving and knowing someone actually cares for them and wants them to succeed in anything and everything they do.
Some words of encouragement she has for students:
A lot of things are not going to matter in the future. Things like relationships and a bad test score aren’t going to matter in 10 years, even in 1 year they might not matter. Some things feel big now but putting those things in perspective, they won’t matter.
