At Lakeside, students are fortunate to have dedicated teachers like Sophie Archer, an ESOL science teacher who brings a unique experience and passion in her classroom. This is her second year teaching at Lakeside, and she has already made a huge impact. Not just by teaching principles of physical and environmental science, but also by having a genuine connection with her students.
Her journey at Lakeside is a diverse one, juggling science classes and finding her place in high school education. She spent 6 years on her journey at Lakeside, teaching middle school and sharing her knowledge across classrooms in Thailand, Spain, and Costa Rica. However, her path before was quite different. She earned her bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism from the University of Georgia, with her hopes of becoming a news anchor. Yet, she has a desire to influence and educate her lead to pursue a master’s degree in teaching from Georgia State, which has fully shaped her career.
Most of her days are packed from the very start at 7:45 am to 3:45 pm. She starts off teaching, grading, and planning, Which is where she finds joy in the progress being made. She shares, “My favorite part of forming relationships with my students.” This dedication comes with its own challenges. She notes that the most difficult part of her job is “trying to stay positive and supportive when students are experiencing hardships outside of school.”
Beyond the classroom, Ms. Archer has a love for science with a personal passion; her favorite book is a series called “Throne of Glass.” She enjoys reading, staying active, exploring, and traveling to new places. She also likes going on adventures and trying new bars and restaurants. Her go-to snack is cheddar popcorn, a simple pleasure that helps and complements her daily life.
Ms. Archer’s advice to students is to have a faith in education, connect with others, and cultivate curiosity in science. She states, “My advice to students is to put their phones and computers away and talk to people.” She adds, “Learn about people around you and different cultures.” She finds that working with students is the most rewarding way to understand and learn from them. Her aim is “to leave a positive impact on the Lakeside High School Community by showcasing others to a sense of wonder and global awareness.
Being able to understand her students and connect with the world makes her happier than just being a science teacher. She’s a mentor, a world traveler, and an advocate for engaged learning and making connections. Her unique experiences and genuine care for her students make her an essential part of the Lakeside community. Constantly derived for the world of science and an inspiration for future thinkers who expand and explore their curiosity of science and those around them.
