The start of a new year represents fresh starts and unexpected changes. For Lakeside High School, we have been offered the opportunity for Mercedes-Benz to host our annual prom! This is an amazing opportunity for us, but it will be unusually early this year, as when we once had prom in May, we will now be having it in the middle of March.
The early date is not uncalled for, though, due to factors like the 2026 World Cup occurring in Atlanta at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The World Cup is one of the largest events in the world, and preparation has to start very early to make sure that the Benz is prepared for any curveball thrown.
Atlanta city officials have gone as far as to pave major roads that will improve traffic flow. These roads include MLK Jr Drive, Northside Drive, and I-285, alongside expanding Atlanta’s Beltline South Trail for easy access to the stadium. Who would have thought it would take a major sporting event for Atlanta to finally fix these major issues?
Mercedes-Benz Stadium is infamous for being the home of Atlanta United Futbol Club and the Falcons. However, in the summer of next year, the stadium will be hosting teams such as Spain, Cabo Verde, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Haiti, South Africa, and Uzbekistan. More teams will be determined from the qualifiers.
Due to the large sporting event, the stadium requires months of preparation. This preparation includes field work, security measures, international broadcasting systems, and FIFA-specific renovations that will limit the use of the stadium in the upcoming spring.
As a result, schools such as Lakeside that are planning events at the Benz had to move hastily and claim their spot before the Benz began major renovations. Hosting our prom in March allows students to experience the magic of Mercedes-Benz Stadium before it’s in full lockdown mode for the World Cup renovations.
The World Cup’s presence adds to the significance of hosting our annual prom at the venue. Students will be celebrating in the same spot as international soccer players will be in just a few short months. No other past graduating classes can say that they had their prom at the same stadium where they held the World Cup.
For students, faculty, as well as parent chaperones, the early date for prom is no problem. The experience will be unforgettable, being able to dance under a mammoth opening roof and surround sound speakers blasting your favorite songs; I personally would suggest Aura or Sacrifice be played by Mariah The Scientist.
Prom has always been a highlight in a high schooler’s life. This year, it will be more than a highlight; it will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. As students step on the dance floor in March, they won’t just be attending prom; they will be experiencing history.
