By the time winter break arrives, the chill in the air feels familiar to hockey fans. While lights glow on houses and holiday music fills hearts and stores, many people find comfort in something else, like watching their favorite hockey team compete. Watching their favorite hockey team is just as much of a winter tradition as gift exchanges or a holiday party with friends.
Hockey season lines up perfectly with winter, and for fans, the sport becomes part of the holiday season, which helps explain why fans feel such a strong connection to the sport. For example, late-night games, rivalry matchups, and outdoor events like the Winter Classic give fans something exciting to look forward to during the colder weeks of the year.
For many people, having loyalty to a team starts with the team you watch growing up. Cheering for a hometown team often begins with family traditions, passed down from your parents or extended family. The Boston Bruins, one of the NHL’s Original 6 teams, are a strong example. The Bruins were founded in 1924 and are known for their style of play and crazy loyal fan base.
¨I grew up watching Bruins games with my dad during winter break,¨ junior Grady Tuggey said. ¨ It´s just something we’ve always done, and now it feels like a part of the holidays for my family and me.¨
Some fans begin to like teams with interesting histories and championship success. The Montreal Canadiens stand out as one of the most legendary franchises in hockey. Because they have 24 Stanley Cup titles, the Canadiens represent tradition, pride, and a big contribution to hockey culture across Canada.
Newer teams, however, have also captured the attention of fans. The Vegas Golden Knights, founded in 2017, made history by reaching the Stanley Cup Final in their first season and winning the championship in 2023. Their fast-paced improvements and high-energy appeals to younger fans looking for excitement on the ice.
¨I’ve started to like the Golden Knights because their games are fun to watch,¨ sophomore Mail said. ¨Even though they’re a pretty new team, they’re really good and have exciting games.
One of the best players for the Chicago Blackhawks is Patrick Kane, due to his very skilled offensive talent, his performance (like his 2010 Cup-winning goal), and multiple Stanley Cups. He keeps fans loyal to his team and excitement on the rankings.
Beyond wins and losses, hockey brings people together during the holiday season. Families sit in their living rooms after dinner around the TV, friends post updates on social media, and conversations about playoffs contribute to some people´s everyday conversations.
