Winter break is the time of year to kick back, relax, and spend quality time with friends, family, or even by yourself! Break can become boring if you have nothing to do, but when the colder weather starts to make its way to Atlanta, fun and exciting activities follow shortly after!
When I want a cure to my boredom, I look to my friends because they are the funniest, most thoughtful people I have and will ever have met. They are an instant boredom killer right when I need it. When I am with them, we go out to places such as Little 5 Points, the Beltline, Ponce City Market, and the mall.
A popular destination in Atlanta during the winter months is Atlantic Station. During the holiday season, it becomes a jolly space consisting of ice skating, movies, and pop-up shops. Even when you are just going to shop at the businesses located at Atlantic Station, you can feel the holiday spirit in the air!
Junior, Chris Williams states, “I hope to go ice skating at Atlantic Station, then go watch a movie at Regal, and maybe shop while I’m there.” Chris’s ideas put a spotlight on how mixing multiple different activities in one day can form a memorable experience and make the long winter days go by fast.
Students at Lakeside are always looking for new and upcoming places to go with their friends and family. Being with extended family can be awkward at times, as student Imni Smith expresses. ”Being with family other than my parents can be awkward, but I like to go places like sledding and watching the light show at Stone Mountain with family. It helps avoid the awkwardness of being around distant family and also avoids boring questions like ‘How is school going?’ ”
Baking holiday treats is a tradition for people all over the world, the most popular being gingerbread houses. Making gingerbread houses can either be a bonding activity or, if you are more competitive, a race to see who can build theirs the neatest but also the fastest! Shaylin Cousins says, “Over winter break, I plan to have my friends come over to my house to build gingerbread houses while we watch Christmas movies like Home Alone and The Polar Express.”
For the people who like to be adventurous while also staying warm, cozy, crafty activities might be for you! Places like Phipps Plaza offer cooking classes with holiday discounts, where you get to learn how to make a dish while also paying less!
On the other hand, if you like to get your hands dirty, a pottery class might be the right fit for you. Nayla Brown says, “I’m taking a pottery class with my girlfriend because not only am I getting to learn a new trade, and bonding with my girlfriend, but I am also making my mom a handmade gift in the process.”
Even if you are an introverted type of person, you can still have fun all by yourself! You can bundle up and take a walk, soaking in all the holiday joy, or, on the other hand, you can get comfortable and watch a couple of holiday movies or even just listen to Christmas music!
In conclusion, winter break offers numerous opportunities to alleviate seasonal depression and boredom. From fun activities like ice skating and visiting Stone Mountain, to cozy nights in, sipping on hot chocolate and watching movies. There is something for everyone and every personality!
