Let’s be honest, most of us don’t get enough sleep, and we know it. But sleep is not just something teachers and parents care about for no reason. It actually matters a lot. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says teens need at least eight to ten hours of sleep each night, but most of us do not get that much (CDC, 2022).
First off, when you sleep, your brain is recharging, kind of like your phone. If you do not plug your phone in, it dies. Same for your brain. If you do not sleep enough, you cannot think straight in class, and you forget things way faster. So if you want to remember what you studied, don’t skip sleep. You might think cramming all night before a test will help, but honestly, it just makes it harder to think and remember stuff the next day. Sleep lets your brain organize everything you learned, so you’re actually better prepared if you just go to bed.
Sleep also helps your mood. When you are tired, everything feels worse. Someone bumps into you in the hallway, and it feels like the end of the world. When you get enough sleep, little things don’t bother you as much. You just feel better. People who sleep enough are usually less stressed and not as grumpy. If you notice you’re sad or angry for no reason, it could just be because you need more sleep.
Your body needs sleep, too. When you are asleep, your body is fixing itself. If you get sick a lot or just feel blah, it might be because you are not sleeping enough. Sleep even helps your skin and your hair. Your immune system gets a boost when you’re sleeping, so you’re less likely to catch whatever cold is going around. If you play sports, sleep helps your muscles heal, so you can actually get better at what you do.
Another thing is that not sleeping enough can mess up your whole schedule. You might start sleeping through your alarm, running late for classes, or needing like five cups of coffee just to stay awake. That makes every day harder than it has to be. Getting enough sleep can make mornings less of a nightmare and help you keep up in class and with your friends.
Last thing is life is just better when you are not tired. You have more energy, and you can actually laugh at jokes and have fun with your friends. You can pay attention in class, remember stuff, and just feel more like yourself. So next time you want to stay up super late, maybe remember that a little more sleep can make your whole day better. It is not just about following rules, it’s about making your life easier and a lot more fun.
