As the season draws to a close, Lakeside High School’s tennis program celebrates not just victories, but the profound impact the sport has had on its senior players. Rowan Scrone and Charlie Brewer, both seniors and long-time contributors to the team, reflect on their journeys, highlighting dedication, resilience and the cherished bonds forged on and off the court.
Rowan Scrone, a dedicated player for four years at Lakeside High School and tennis enthusiast for thirteen years, looks forward to a future that blends athletic ambition with academic pursuit. “ I will continue to play tennis for George Mason in Virginia,” Rowan shares, “and hope to study psychology on a pre-med track” This dual commitment underscores a mature outlook on the next chapter. Rowan’s journey hasn’t been without its challenges. A significant wrist injury sidelined them for six months, a period that tested their resolve. “My most challenging moment was when I faced my wrist injury,” Rowan explains, “ I overcame this by going to therapy and slowly getting healthy again.” This experience instilled valuable lessons: “This sport has taught me patience and the importance of friendship.” Rowan’s preference for hard courts, citing “it is easier to stay balanced and you do not get clay in your shoes,” and a strong back head, with a desire to improve their serve, further illustrate a strategic and self-aware approach to the game. The energy and passion of the team Rowan notes will be deeply missed, emphasizing the program’s special quality as a “close team”.
Charlie Brewer, also a senior who has dedicated four years to Lakeside High School tennis and ten years to the sport overall, echoes the sentiment of camaraderie “The friends and dinners after matches” are what Charlie will miss most, highlighting the social fabric of the team. Their journey has also been marked by moments of overcoming adversity, as exemplified by a comeback win against a formidable opponent. “Down big against GAC but figured out a strategy to win and came back, “ Charlie recalls, demonstrating strategic thinking and perseverance. Like Rowan, Charlie has found a mentor in Coach Liam, who has been instrumental for six years , providing crucial support. Charlie’s game showcases a strong serve, with a focus on improving returns. The Lesson of “keep going and friendship” resonates deeply, reflecting the resilience and supportive environment fostered by the program. Charlie, too, prefers hard courts, valuing their consistency.
Both Rowan and Charlie’s senior night matches were a testament to their impressive scores of 8-0. While acknowledging the bittersweet nature of closing this chapter, Rowan and Charlie depart Lakeside High with a wealth of experience, life skills and friendships that will undoubtedly shape their futures, both on and off the tennis court. The Lakeside High tennis program has not only honed their athletic abilities but has also cultivated resilience, sportsmanship and profound appreciation for the power of teamwork and personal growth.
