When students returned to school in January, many felt like the new semester was a fresh start. After winter break, students came back to classes with new goals and plans for the rest of the school year. January is a time when students try to improve and focus more on school
Some students said the new semester helps them feel motivated. Sophomore Samantha Hill said she wanted to improve her grades this semester.
“Last semester was kind of rough for me,” Hill said. “I’m trying to pay more attention and miss less of class so I can get things done on time.” Many students feel the same way and hope the new semester will go more smoothly.
Teachers also notice changes in students after winter break. Math Teacher Mr.Jewel said students “They come back ready to start over” , Johnson said. “But sometimes they don’t last very long.” He explained that once homework and tests start adding up, students can feel stressed again.
January is also a time when students think about getting involved in school activities. Clubs and spots often welcome new members at the start of the semester. Junior Maddie Horne said she joined Musical theater because she wanted to try something new. “Because I felt like trying something new and I’ve always loved the arts and meeting new people.”
Even though January feels like a fresh start, students still face challenges pretty regularly. Balancing schoolwork, home life, and maintaining a social life with friends.
As the semester continues, students may lose some motivation they had in January. Still, the new year gives them a chance to reset and try again. Whether students want better grades or just less stress, January reminds them they can work towards improvement.
