Let’s be real, pretty much everyone has grabbed something from the school vending machines at least once, whether you forgot your lunch or just needed a snack to get through the day. But if you actually look at what’s inside, it’s mostly the same stuff: chips, candy, and sugary drinks. That got me thinking if we should have healthier options in there, too.
From talking to other seniors, it sounds like a lot of students would like better choices, but everyone cares about something different. For some people, health is the most important thing. Caroline Spires, for example, said she would definitely want more healthy snacks in the machines. She mentioned she would like to see things like Z bars or Clif Bars, something that isn’t just all sugar and carbs. Caroline said, “Usually when I go to the vending machines, I want to see healthier options. If I don’t bring food, I don’t want to just be eating chips, you know?” For her, health is a really big deal, and she said she would even pay a little more if it meant getting something better.
Other people care more about taste. Chaya Gibbs thinks healthier snacks would be a good idea, like granola bars or breakfast bars, but she isn’t sure if most students would actually pick the healthy stuff. She said, “Probably not,” because a lot of students just go for whatever tastes good. Taste is the biggest thing for her, but she did say she might pay a bit more for a snack she really likes. So, while taste usually wins, there’s still some interest in healthier snacks if they’re actually tasty.
For some, price is what matters most. Ashley Diaz had some strong opinions, too. She said, “I would love to. I think it would be very nice to see different varieties other than junk food.” Ashley pointed out that the school talks a lot about being healthy, but then the vending machines are full of snacks that aren’t really good for you. She said she would like to see veggie sticks available, but she isn’t convinced most people would actually buy them. For Ashley, price is the main thing she pays attention to, and she said she wouldn’t pay more for healthier snacks.
It’s pretty clear that students want better snack choices, but not everyone is looking for the same thing. Some care about health, some care about taste, and most of us just want something cheap and easy. Not everyone is going to pick a granola bar instead of chips, but it would be nice to at least have the option. Adding some healthier snacks along with the regular stuff could be a good start. That way, everyone can pick what works for them, especially when you just need something to get through the school day.
Of course, switching up the snacks in the machines might not be easy. Healthier snacks could end up costing more, and not everyone wants the same things. But giving students more options, and making sure they actually taste good and don’t cost a ton, could help more people make better choices. It might also help to include some stats or expert opinions on how healthier snacks can make a difference for students. For now, just having the choice would be a step in the right direction.
